Andy's Blog: 2014 World Wheelchair Rugby Championships - Day 9

Two games completed and two wins towards the Gold Medal.  Our first game was a great start to the tournament.  Denmark played very strong, no doubt bolstered by their strong performance against Belgium.  We were able to play our rotations and settle into the tournament with a strong finish to the match.  To put the game into context and the strength of Denmark, they lost today by only seven goals to Australia who played their strongest line-ups.

Against Finland, the team had to wait the whole day to play a late afternoon match.  We had a good sleep-in and hearty breakfast before heading to the gym.  Our game against Finland was clinical! We achieved our game plan of playing Canada Rugby and not playing down to the opposition.  67-40 is a sizeable win and gives us confidence against Great Britain tomorrow morning.

It is an early start with a 7 am breakfast following a late night arrival to our hotel, but the staff are preparing the athletes well and recovery protocols are doing the job!  The Great Britain game will be a superb test.  They surprised us at the Canada Cup in May where we snuck out a few points win at the very end.  We will not take them lightly tomorrow and realize that we have to be at our best.  In the evening we play Belgium, so it stands to be a heavy day with lots of rugby.  Hope you are enjoying the action and looking forward to hearing you cheer all the way from Canada!
